Bigger Than a Giant

Do you ever get scared? What is something you are afraid of? The dark, heights, doing bad on a test, the neighborhood bully? No matter what it is everyone is afraid of something at least once in their life.

In the book 1 Samuel there is a story about a group of people that were afraid of something. They weren’t just regular people though, they were soldiers, Israelite soldiers. When I think of soldiers I think of brave warriors that aren’t afraid to fight, but not these soldiers, they hid in their tents. So what was so terrifying that they had to hide? They were afraid of a Philistine named Goliath. But he wasn’t just a Philistine, he was a warrior, and not just a warrior, but a giant warrior, and when I say giant I mean over 9 feet tall!  Now this giant worrier was saying mean things to the people of Israel and making fun of God. The king and all his soldiers were to scared to fight back but that’s when a boy came along. His name was David and he was bringing food to his brothers who were soldiers when he heard Goliath yelling mean things. He told King Saul that he was going to be the one that defeated the giant. So he took his sling and picked up five stones and went out to meet the giant. Now if I were in his place I would be shaking in my shoes and I’m sure he was too, but David had something bigger than the giant, something bigger than his fear. He had God on his side. He had His strength and protection.

As you go through your day I hope that you know that God is always on your side. When we are afraid we can turn to Him and He will take care of us. He is bigger than our fears. In Isaiah 41:10 it says “So don’t worry, because I am with you. Don’t be afraid, because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help you. I will support you  with my right hand that saves you.”

Here is a short clip of the amazing story of how God protected David and helped him defeat the giant! Make sure to comment your favorite part of the story!

Greatest Commandment

Commandments. What do you think of when you hear that word? Rules? Guidelines? Well that’s exactly what they are. They are instructions straight from God to us. Have you ever done something that your parents told you not to do? At first you felt like you got away with it but then you started to feel guilty. That’s because not only did you disobey your parents but you disobeyed Jesus. If we follow the commandments God gave us we will be happy. If we break them it not only hurts us but hurts God too. These rules weren’t made to try and control us but to protect us. They were made with love. You are very special and Jesus loves you and wants to keep you safe.

There are lots of commandments that God gave us, but there is one that is super special. Not only is it a really good commandment but Jesus says it is the greatest one! “Love the Lord your God. Love him with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second most important command is this: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ These two commands are the most important commands.” Mark 12:30-31

Here is a video to remind us that keeping His commandments and loving one another is the best thing to do!
